I remember when our den was added. It was very
special to have such a unique room. There was a big deal made
about the parquet ceiling, wood floor (carpet was
the norm), the hidden lighting and the Andersen windowsCadillac
of windows. I recall coming home from school and watching
the carpenter, Fred Entler, doing his work, and how he had left
a brokerage career to do what he loved (even back then!).

I have a vague, and possibly inaccurate, recollection
of visiting the house just after the den was completed. Aunt Sylvia
had been keeping my mother apprised by telephone as to the progress
of the construction, and we looked forward to seeing the room
addition. Unlike the traditional look of the rest of the house,
this was an airy, modern room with a warm wood floor, Danish-Modern
furniture, and plenty of large windows on all three exterior walls
looking out to the back yard.

One of the strongest images of my grandmother
in my mind is the way she sits sideways on the sofa in the den
to do the crossword puzzle and to close her eyes and take a nap.
She is one of those people who can close her eyes for ten minutes
and actually nap. I dont know how many times I have been
sitting at the table in the den playing solitaire and I look over
to see her sitting on that sofa taking a nap or doing the crossword
puzzle.
Sylvia.
This really is the room I live in. I love this
room. I read in here, I sew in here, I watch TV in here. I think
this is my most favorite room in the whole house. And it has more
of me than all the other rooms, so I feel pretty proud of it.
